Independent Reader Review
Authoritative guide, Having just 'rescued' my first lurcher two months ago I bought this on spec and found it a riveting read. My (fourth) rescue dog is 5 years old and not trained to the course, so in hindsight it might have been better to get The House Lurcher by the same author, which I have since read and enjoyed just as much. Both books are excellent - format, layout and illustrations are well organised and full of useful advice and information. I especially found her remarks on feeding raw meat rather than commercial muck a revelation after 19 years with my previous 3 dogs ( all crosses ) and have changed my dog feeding as a result. Jackie steers a thoughtful and fair-minded course between the various, sometimes conflicting demands and values of coursers hunters and pet-owners. Both books gave pleasure, informing and entertaining at one and the same time. I shall re-read them at various points and recommend them without reservation. Above all, what comes through the writing is her love and respect for these marvellous animals - not always apparent in other books on the subject by acknowledged experts. |

Product Description
Although not renowned for its high intelligence, the lurcher is a truly remarkable type of dog. A customized cross between a sight hound [such as a greyhound or whippet] and other breeds, it is extremely fast, agile, hardy and gentle, and can be kept as a working dog or as a pet.
About the Author
Jon Hutcheon has a strong affinity with animals and the countryside and has a very active interest in conservation and rural management. His love of lurchers began as a child and this book is based on a lifetime's experience of owning and working dogs. His main passion is field sports, especially the control of rabbits with the use of lurchers, nets and ferrets, and he is the author of Long Netting and Net-Making - A Rabbit Catcher's Guide published by Crowood. The New Complete Lurcher
David Brian Plummer

A must for all lurcher owners. Plummer addresses his topic with the knowledge and wisdom of a man who has dedicated his life to dogs and the working of them. He not only imparts his wisdom compatently, he entertains us with little anecdotes where so many other books of this nature simply inform in a strictly practical sense. When hunting is finally outlawed this will be a fine historical document of what certain men at the end of the twentieth century did in their leisure time. |

Pet Owner's Guide to the Lurcher

Good general guide to what the title suggests. This is not a big book and can be read within 30 minutes. It gives a general guide about keeping lurchers as pets - therefore do not expect any advice about using lurchers for hunting and coursing. Although most owners believe the word 'Lurcher' derives from Romany origins, Framingham suggests a couple more alternatives. Likewise some of the lurcher variations are quite well described. However, most of what is contained in this book is information that any book about keeping dogs as pets would have. So in essence if you have a lurcher which you do not wish to work, then this will give you a fair insight. |

An exceptional book for the working dog owner. In this book Frank Sheardown clearly looks into the use of lurchers in the past and present. Not only does it have different chapters for both different classes of dog but different types of game as well. This is a fantastic book that clearly shows why the abolishment of hunting would lead to the over-running of the countryside. |

Understanding the Working Lurcher
Jakie Drakeford

Our Price: £16.99 |
Independent Reader Reviews
Very informative. Although I do not use my lurcher for hunting (he's just a family pet) I thought that this book was very helpful as it told me all about exercising and feeding my dog. I liked the photos of all the different greyhound crosses. This book is very useful for telling us all about a lurcher's instincts and I would recommend this book to anyone with a lurcher (especially if they have a working dog). |

I wish I'd had this book! When I got my lurcher 2 years ago I looked everywhere for decent advice and found only short paragraphs in general dog books. Considering the number of lurchers which end up in pet homes they are sadly under-represented in dog literature. This book should be supplied with every rescue lurcher and recommended by lurcher breeders who are letting a dog go to a pet home. Lurchers are not like other dogs and if you try to treat them as such your efforts will often end in tears. For the price of a couple of dog leads, do your dog a favour and purchase the book! |
